The Dad's for Life movement has always been a great initiative that has begun in Singapore. Being one of the pioneer schools who embarked on this programme, it only made for a great opportunity for the PE department of SHPS to find a way to collaborate with them and promote their cause. As part of our own Community Involvement Project, the PE teachers in the school designed a great day of fun-filled sports for father and child to compete in or against each other.

Our Kinect activity was the highlight of the day with many fathers really getting a work out as their children showed them the way. We hope more of you will come on board if you are interested next year as we work to continue this truly rewarding CIP. Thanks again to all teachers who made this event possible.

Lower Primary Sports 2011

It was another exciting Lower Primary Sports Day for our P1&2 pupils. A total of 8 games were played with each child representing their class in at least one game. Some won prizes while others did their best and received consolation prizes. It was truly a well run sports day with Mr Aloysius Loh and his team deserving all the praise for their efforts in organising every aspect of the games. A few of them came back on Sunday to lay the lines for the lanes and also set up for what was one very fun-filled sports day.

Some of the staff were asked to be lane judges which required them to walk up and down eight times with each game multiplied by 8 games. That was truly a workout for most of them. The other teachers had to maintain discipline amongst the 800 screaming and excited pupils who were busy cheering their friends or talking to their friends about their amazing experience competing. Mrs Lim Tai Foon has to be commended for her consolation prize idea which we have been using for the past 5 years. Every year, she will make the chocolate medallions as a consolation reward for the effort put in by every child. Behind the scenes, Mrs Ho-Tan and Ms Doris Tai with the help of their GB and BB pupils helped with refreshments and equipment respectively. Their efforts helped to make the sports day a pleasant one for everyone.

We were blessed to have such an amazing facility to conduct our sports day under shelter and also great weather unlike the gusty winds with torrential downpours which were threatening the day before. All this together with the amazing efforts of teachers, pupil helpers (BB & GB) and PSG parents (our VIPs) made the entire event truly a memorable one.

We thank again Mr Zakie (demonstrator & equipment), Mrs David (prizes), Mr Lee(equipment), Mr Noh (competitors steward), Mr Zanizam (Chief Judge), Mr Vai (Video Judge) and Mr Loh (overall i/c). Together they form the PE team that organised this event and on a daily basis educate your children for PE.

Day 2 of Camp Kesel

Another great day of fun. Our pupils continued where they left off as they embarked on various high elements. Many pupils had to conquer their fear of heights and once that first step was taken, the rest was plain sailing. They worked hard to plan for the campfire item and it is going to be an entertaining night.

Even our teachers had a great time trying out the zipline at the end. Overall, we thank God for great weather, minimal incidents and safety over our students.

379 St.Hilda's Primary pupils made their way to Jalan Bahtera, MOE Campsite this morning. Their day was full of exciting new activities consisting of challenges such as the Zipline and Rock Wall. The kids had to overcome personal fears and their own mental barriers as they attempted each activity.
Even our teachers were having a go at challenging themselves and setting a good example to the rest of their pupils. It was great fun for everyone.

Great start to the P4 Feista

In our 1st of a three part report on the P4 Talent Fiesta sports practices, we focus on the frisbee and soccer groups. The soccer group had Mr Noh, Mr Long, Mdm Noorainn, Mr Elmi and Mr Lim HZ rallying them to play soccer. Some joke that it can be considered high altitude training but no one was out of breath as the boys and girls showed what they could do with the ball. The time was well spent as each player got to know their team mate better.

The pupils involved in Frisbee have been blessed to play on the spacious roof top hockey pitch. Together with help from the Singapore Frisbeesports coaches, Uncle Rahim and his team, the P4 kids now have skills to play the game. Learning backhand and forehand throws for the better part of the session, they hone their skills and team understanding during the 2 hour session.

House Practice at Our New Sports Facility

The P6 pupils got a taste of what the new sports facility can offer. 5 sports played throughout the entire complex showed how blessed the pupils are. Gone are the days of walking to the stadium to play at the soccer field. Our soccer pupils play on our new hockey pitch and the last session was a glorious day for pictures. Here are some shots of our children in action. Next week our P4s will get a taste of competition and we hope the new venues will provide a great space to play for everyone.

Father-Child Amazing Race

A project by our PE department and the Fathers Group here at St.Hilda's was held yesterday in the school. This collaboration initiated by Mr Vai and his team was truly inspiring as the team helped organise a mini version of the Amazing Race for father and child bonding. This was the main objective coupled with the opportunity to allow the fathers in the school a chance to see the new sports complex.
The games comprise of 10 stations stretching across the school grounds. It tested teamwork, perseverance and patience. Both father and child had tremendous fun completing each activity sometimes requiring encouragement from either parent or child. The games took slightly more than an hour to complete and tokens for completion were given to every team. All the games designed took into account the varying age group (7yrs to 12yr old kids) and also varying fitness levels of the fathers. With that in mind, the creativity of the PE team took over and the games created were fun yet easy to do. The team enjoyed every part of this project as many of us are fathers ourselves. The intent behind the project has struck a chord among us and we hope to give back in meaningful ways such as this for future Community Involvement Projects. A sneak peak at our PE programmes

Our PE department has been slowly moving towards a more comprehensive PE programme which encompasses basic skills acquistion while mastering some game concepts for active participation in sports. This year our P3's have undergone Hockey, Netball and Frisbee as part of their curriculum. We conduct these programmes within PE in order to surface budding talent for our school teams.

Our P4s are undergoing net games modules this semester. Last term, Badminton skills were taught while this term, Mr Loh and Mr Vai are introducing Table-Tennis skills. With the numerous game skills imparted, we hope our pupils will eventually go on to pick up an interest in one of the many sports taught and go on to lead a healthy lifestyle when they leave the school.

YOG: Cycling and Tennis

Our pupils manage to watch Cycling and Tennis over the last few days. The Cycling competition, being held in Tampines Bike Park, was a huge change for our kids who usually watch popular sports like soccer and table-tennis most of the time on TV. For them, it was a totally new experience watching the bikers race for a competitive time for their event. The Tennis game on the other hand, featured players who were rank in their age group. The standard of tennis was high and our pupils were treated to an experience usually reserved for Wimbledon fanatics.

Our Proud Bearers of the Flame

At 6.15pm this evening, Shuqrie and Crystal carried the torch on behalf of our school. A truly proud moment for both them as their friends and family cheered them on. Mr Loh arranged for them to carry 'pom poms' and clappers. As we waited in anticipation, news that the runners were arriving filtered through the crowd. The first signs of their arrival were the numerous police escorts that stopped traffic along the way. Soon after, the big red bus arrived with YOG supporters giving out coke from the sponsors and more clappers and horns for the crowd to get involved in the welcoming of the flame. St.Hilda's Sec representative handed the torch over to Shuqrie who took his time to bask in the proud moment. His relatives turn out in force to support him along with his friends. Similarly, Crystal had her own supporters too who lined the streets also waiting for her arrival. When she got off the bus, everyone cheered her name. She ran the next leg with pride and everyone waved their hands and clappers in the air to signal the start of a short but memorable journey. Within seconds, everything was over and the euphoria subsided. We all took stock of the situation , reflecting on what had just happened and the immense pride we had for the two of them. As everyone headed back to the school gates, we again congratulated both of them and took our necessary pictures as momentos of truly an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience. May God bless the YOG and our athletes.

Come Support Our Torch Bearers

SHUQRIE OMAR

CRYSTAL CHEE
Shuqrie Omar and Crystal Chee will represent St.Hilda's Primary as our representative for the Youth Olympic Torch Bearers. They have since been successfully appointed to be a selected group of 2400 who would be carrying the flame that was lit in Greece on 23rd July.

We will see it pass our school on the 2nd day of the Singapore Leg on 10th August. Our two Torchbearers are expected to be receiving and relaying the flame between 6pm to 7pm from the bus-stop outside of our school (Shuqrie recevi from Person X) towards Jamiyah Home for Aged (Crystal receive from Shuqrie) and then onto Tampines Ave 4, the Shell petrol kiosk(Crystal relay to person Y).

For those of you not in the know, the lighting of the flame was, and still is a very sacred process held at Ancient Olympia., Greece, following in the tradition of previous Olympic Games. For the first time in history, the Singapore flag was flown on the grounds of Ancient Olympia, and the Singapore National Anthem echoed over those grounds of Ancient Olympia.

If you have the time and energy on the 10th of August between 6pm and 7pm, do make a trip towards school and 'cheer the flame' and support our students. It may be a short distance for the run, but I think it would be most memorable as you might never ever get this close to an Olmpic Flame ever again in your lifetime.

P5 Camp

Our first week of Semester 2 was an eye opener for the P5 pupils as they attended an Adventure Camp at MOE Jalan Bahtera. It was an exciting 3 days of high elements, roughing it out in Lim Chu Kang and most of all, bonding with classmates outside of the normal classroom setting. With no computer games, handphones and television to distract them, the P5 pupils conducted themselves very well. Their singing, cheers and happy voices filled the air each day. Every pupils left with an experience which will have enriched their lives as a Primary school pupil.

Even our teachers had a first hand experience conquering their fear of heights. Our Best Teacher Camper Award has to go to Mrs Elizabeth Simon who attempted 6 activities throughout her stay there. Her confident example inspired many pupils to try their hand at the scary but extremely fun high elements.

The entire camp went well due to the excellent planning of camp commandant Mr Aloysius Loh. Our P5 pupils are truly blessed to have had 3 days of great weather too and we owe it all to God for answering our prayers for protection over our pupils and good weather throughout the camp.

Our CHERISHed ones

I am pleased to announce our school's latest achievement for CHERISH, a Platinum Award. CHERISH stands for (CHampioning Efforts Resulting in Improved School Health). We are truly blessed with such an honour and it could not have been possible without the following Champions,

1) I need to thank Mrs Jane Chong who painstakingly put the whole report together last year when things got really busy for us. She consolidated the entire report from various sources.

2) Mr Zanizam who monitored the tuckshop vendors preparing them for the Model School Tuckshop Programme. He also championed our efforts through the Health Education programmes he designed.

3) Our PE teachers, old and new, who did their best with our I-Fit kids organising for them various fun activities. Our Talent Fiesta has been lauded as a good programme which must be continued for years to come.

4) Mr Daniel Chua,and the pupil development team who held our Character development programme together.

5) Mrs Phua for working with our school counsellors and special needs officers in making our pastoral care one of the best.

6) Mrs Katherine and the PSG who in their own right organise various parent programmes that catered to our community partners. This was also another plus point for us.

7) The NE guys who also helped promote the YOG this year for us and Mr Noh for his CIP efforts.

8) All the participants of Sports for Life Run and Walk each year and our pupils who do well in NAPFA.

9) All our focus group sports people such as Noh(running), Hui Zhi(Badminton), Joseph(bowling), Zakie (soccer), Hock Gee and Gordon(table-tennis),Pia (aerobics),etc.

10) Last but not least, God for guiding us through that interview and validation.
The pictures above show what our school's efforts in CHERISH are all about. The entire school's effort led us to this important achievement. Holistic Health will continue to be everyone's responsibility here at SHPS.

Our Friend Mr C Kunalan

Mr C Kunalan was our guest today as we commemorated our International Friendship Day. He shared with our pupils his intepretation of Friendship through sports. It was an amazing and touching experience for all of them. His experiences at the various games spoke volumes for the theme of the day. We salute Mr K for his many contributions to Singapore's sporting scene and his efforts to promote the Olympic values of Friendship, Excellence and Respect.

Introducing Mr C Kunalan - By Mr Aloysius Loh
Most people in Singapore know him as the man who clocked 10.38 seconds in the 100m sprint at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. This timing stood as the national record for 33 years, until U.K. Shyam broke it by 0.01sec (10.37s) in 2001. Let’s put it this way, he is STILL the 2nd fastest man Singapore has ever seen. However, I would like to introduce him to you as Mr. K, the teacher.

Mr. K began his career as a Primary school teacher way back in 1961. He moved on to Secondary school in 1967 right up till 1980 and since then, he has been teaching PE-teachers like Mr. Vai, Mr. Noh, Mr. Zanizam, Mr. Zakie and even our trainee teachers Mr. Chiang and Mr. Lee.
When I was training to be a PE-teacher, my classmates and I always looked forward to Mr. K’s lessons. He never failed to keep us attentive in learning and this is not only because of his vast experience and knowledge in the field of athletics and sports, but also because of his very humble approach to teaching.

He never has an unkind word for any student, regardless of how fast or slow a learner you are. Always patient, he would take great pains to show us the various skills and techniques.

Thus, it is no surprise that a teacher like him would be named ‘Teacher of the Year’ not just once, but twice! In short, only one word comes to mind whenever PE-teachers talk about Mr. K. And that word is ‘INSPIRING’!

Youth Olympic Games Exhibition

The PE department will be embarking over the week of 8 Mar to 12 Mar on our YOG education programme. The programme will encompass taking our entire school through the YOG values and history of the Olympics. The exhibition will include the YOG wall which showcases past Olympians achievements and more info on YOG.

YOG being a national event, MOE has cascaded their intention that all staff and students are to show their support throughout this year in the run-up to the big day in August.

What's happening at SHPS?
1) In-House exhibtion will be carried out mostly by PE teachers where students will enhance their awareness of the YOG via worksheets and story-telling.

2) All students and staff will be given a Badge bearing the YOG LOGO. Please have them (and yourselves!) wear throughout the week EXCEPT for TALENT FIESTA on Thursday.

3) After Assembly and devotion on the day of Talent Fiesta, house representatives and student leaders will carry out a march-in of the House Flags and Olympic 'Flame' ala Olympics Opening Ceremony.

4) All students will recite the Olympic Oath after the lighting of the 'flame'. Form Teachers will given a stack of the Oath for distribution only on the morning of the assembly to prevent loss by students.

5) Sportsboys and Sportsgirls will be nominated by their peers for exhibiting the Olympic Values of Friendship, Excellence and Respect during the Fiesta Games.

6) All staff, including EAS are invited to view the exhibition and participate in a Sports Matching Quiz anytime during the week. Submit your entries into the YOG Quiz Box that will be placed on at the general office from Monday. A lucky draw will be conducted in Term 2 during one of our CTs and top 3 winners gets a prize.

Fiesta Rocks

Our Annual Fiesta house practices have begun. The P6 pupils have completed their sessions while the P4 pupils are at their last session next week. Here are some pictures of our P6 kids in action.

Floorball, Captain’s Ball and Handball are keenly contested in the school hall while our Frisbee and Soccer teams slug it out at the field outside Tampines Stadium. Our objectives of getting every child involved(mass participation) have been achieved. It is truly a joy to watch some pupils walking away after the game in the right spirit, shaking the hands of their opponents and encouraging their peers after each game. We want to continue to promote the YOG values of Respect, Excellence and Friendship at our games.

Lesson on Side Arm Throw

Learn how to throw using the side arm method. The secret is in its grip.

In the side arm delivery, the two finger grip is used. Grasp the disc in the throwing hand with the thumb on top so that the rim of the disc makes contact with the web between the thumb and index finger. While maintaining contact with the web, rotate the disc clockwise until the pad of the middle finger makes full contact with the inside of the rim. Place the index finger along side of the middle finger for support. Pinch the disc with the thumb in such a manner that the grip is firm yet comfortable.

Throughout the forward arm swing and release, the palm of the throwing hand must remain parallel to the ground. A very common fault of novice throwers is to rotate the palm during the release causing the disc to turn sharply to the left.

This year, we will find our PE teachers taking on both Upper Primary and Lower Primary classes. The team hopes to introduce new activities and enhance our PE assessment modes. Our annual Talent Fiesta was a tremendous success. This year, given the issues with space due to PRIME, the Sports element of the fiesta moved to the Tampines Sports Hall and Soccer Field outside the Stadium. The pupils prepared hard and long over 6 weeks and teams worked out their strategies at each training session.

The event had been threatened by rain the day before but the prayers of all our teachers were answered when we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day on the 10th Mar. Albeit some mud patches in the soccer field, the games went on smoothly. Frisbee and Soccer slugged it out on the muddy field. Boys and girls splashed their way to victory literally.

At the hall, the 3 other games, Floorball, Captain’s Ball and Handball were keenly contested. The set up in the hall contributed to the success of all games as pupils had ample space to showcase their talents. Our objectives of getting every child involved(mass participation) have been achieved. It was truly a joy to watch some pupils walking away with prizes. For some of them, this might have been their first trophy in a competition.

This year, we introduce the imparting of Youth Olympic Games values through the use of stickers depicting the 3 values being recognized. Respect, Excellence and Friendship had been communicated to the pupils at assembly and teachers were looking out for pupils who exhibited these values. At the end, they picked players with many stickers to win the coverted Best Sportmanship Award. In total, 20 players receive goodies sponsored by Fila.

Throughout the event, we spotted pupils showing respect for the referees, excelling in each activity and thanking each other at the end of each game with a handshake as a sign of friendship.

Back in school, our P5s were busy performing in various categories for the music element of the fiesta. The Art category for P3s saw them Tile-painting YOG sports. Winning entries had their pieces mounted on a wall to commemorate the YOG in 2010.

In the end, CHIA House won the overall Championship based on total points for all categories. The whole event was a success mainly due to the hard work put in by every teacher involved in the fiesta. The Housemasters who work so hard over the 6 weeks of training should also be commended. All in all, we thank God for blessing the event and look forward to the next Fiesta in 2010. It should be a bigger and better event in line with our efforts to promote YOG.

Our P3 pupils showed their talent in Art by creating their impression of the upcoming Youth Olympics in 2010. They drew, painted and tiled their work and best pieces were mounted as a collage. Well done P3 kids.

YOG - FRIENDSHIP

This is our 1st instalment on how teachers at SHPS exhibit YOG values in their day to day lives. Last Saturday, our soccer fanatic teachers got together for another round of recreational soccer. Promoting the value of FRIENDSHIP, the guys had a good time keeping fit and enjoying each others company. We got to meet up with old friends as ex-teacher Mr Shankar and ex-IT manager Razak were invited to join us for a morning of fun. It was also a time to bid farewell to Mr Hakim our IT Trainer who left to join the teaching force as an Allied Educator. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

This was our 3rd get together and we hope to make it a monthly affair. Stay tune for more stories of our teachers promoting RESPECT, EXCELLENCE and FRIENDSHIP.

P3 Hockey and Netball takes off at SHPS

The P3 pupils will have an exciting year as special programmes have been introduced into their curriculum for them. The schools hockey and netball team has worked with the department on a integerated programme for basic skills training for the entire P3 level. All the girls in the level will undergo a 16 week programme to be equiped with netball skills taught by qualified Netball coaches and further supported by our PE teachers during their PE lessons. The boys will undergo hockey skills acquisition to prepare them for selections for the school's hockey team too. All in all, the pupils benefit from the funding for Sports Education while our PE teachers get hands on practice by learning new training methods from qualified coaches in ther resepective fields.

Our P3 pupils had a blast playing against each other in an Inter Class Frisbee competition last Tuesday. Each class nominated their best 10 players for both a boys and girls team. The competition was keen and eventually 2 teams emerge champions. However, the lessons learnt about sportsmanship were more important to our PE teachers. We gavfe away 5 invidual prizes for the 5 most well-behaved sports pupils.

Our soccer crazy teachers got together to play Victoria School teachers in a friendly soccer match last week. We were privilege to be invited to Victoria to play on their new synthetic turf. We had a mixture of youth and experience in the team. More importantly our teachers want to show that they still make an effort to exercise and stay healthy. We hope to invite more teachers in the future to join us in more friendly games. Oh yes, the final score was 2-2.

HEALTH WEEK ENDS WITH OUR TEACHERS IN ACTION!

Friday marked the end of the Health Week where various health tips were promoted to our pupils. During recess, they were treated to a titanic clash between P3 vs P4 teachers and P5 vs P6 teachers in a display of our teachers amazing fitness levels. Our teachers showed our pupils that being fit is key to having fun in sports. Many of our teachers are regular joggers at Bedok Reservoir. Some also have gym memberships or play their own prefered sport. For example, Mr Tan Hock Gee is an avid Table-tennis fan and plays professionally. He is ranked at the National level. Mr Noh, Mr Chua, Mr Soong and many others run regularly at the reservoir and take part in marathons. Mr Zanizam and Ms Daisy Ng play netball in respective National leagues and Mr Vai plays hockey in the National Division 2 League. All our teachers are encourage to sign up with our respective focus groups such as Badminton and floorball groups who play on wednesdays to work up a sweat. Last term we even had soccer for our male teachers. We hope that our pupils will learn from our example and start their own healthy lifestyles. Work hard!Play hard kids!

Hip Hop takes off at SHPS

Last week the P5s started their Hip Hop programme. As part of the overall Programme for School Based Excellence, our school's niche area of Aesthetics promotes various performing art skills such as HIp Hop. The kids were treated to a short musical which incoporated Dance genres including HIp Hop. The dance group, Studio Wu wowed the pupils with grace and beautiful form in their execution of each genre. this marked the start of 8 weeks of intense practicing which will cummulate to a recess time performance in Term 4 in September. We are all looking forward to their performances.

P1 Dancing into the hearts of their parents

Our P1 pupils completed their Tambourine Dance training with a performance for their parents. The showcase had 11 classes and all of them pull off a fine show. Having in mind these kids are only 7 years old, they showed that performing in front of such a big crowd is never to daunting for them. They waved their tambourines and sashayed their way into their parents hearts. The performance was made possible by the P1 teachers led by Mrs Lim Tai Foon and Mrs Jeline Tan. We are grateful to our Dance company, Dance Atelier whose guidance and coaching of the kids made the event possible. We also should thank the parents who came to give their support to their kids and I am sure it will go a long way towards their development.

Teachers leading the way to healthy living

Our male teachers came together last Saturday morning to mark the 1st ever Futsal games. The game was played at East Coast Park at the new Futsal pitch built by the beach. The setting was great as the fresh sea breeze kept everyone feeling good throughout the game. The pace of the game was also controlled to ensure nobody burnt out before the 1st hour.

The aim of organising this termly affair is to encourage our male teachers to take part in a healthy lifestyle activity. The game was organised by Mr Vai and will be a termly event which anyone can come and join. The feedback was that our teachers enjoyed the light hearted affair which got the heart pumping and helped bring our teachers closer together. Through his connections, Mr Vai also invited some friends from other schools who came to play, network and share about their life outside of work. They comprise an NIE lecturer, some DDM colleagues and even Shane from the St.Hilda's Sec. All in all, everyone is looking forward to the next one.

Some of these youth may represent our nation in 2 years time at the YOG. We wish the YOG committee all God's blessings upon them in their preparation for our nations proudest event.

Good morning colleagues and students,

Today is indeed an exciting day for Singapore! As you would already know, Singapore and Moscow are in the running to be host city of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. At 7 pm this evening, the International Olympic Committee which is based in Lausanne, Switzerland, will be announcing the winner of the bid.

Singapore has come very far in our bid to be the host city and this is made possible due to the commitment and determination shown by our government, private organisations and youths. To build up to the announcement, there is a pre-event Torch Relay by some schools, led by Hwa Chong Institution, which started this morning and will end at the Padang at about 1850 hours. There will also be a Parade/Walk down Orchard Road this afternoon from CK Tang to the Padang and led by Singapore Sports School. We have been invited to send 40 school members to be part of the event this evening when the results will be announced.

We would like to give you some background of the YOG. When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced its intention to hold the inaugural YOG in Summer 2010, Singapore decided to bid for the honour of hosting the games. Singapore’s bid was sent to Lausanne, along with 9 other cities on 23 October. On 19 November 2007, we received heartening news that Singapore was shortlisted as one of the five cities - along with Moscow, Turin, Athens and Bangkok to be further evaluated for suitability as the host city. On 21 January this year, Singapore moved closer to being the host city when we were further shortlisted to the final two - along with Moscow. The choice of the host city will be decided by majority votes cast by the 110 IOC (International Olympic Committee) members.

At this point, you might be wondering how the YOG came about and what it means for a youth like yourself. The YOG was envisaged by the International Olympic Committee Chairman Jacques Rogges. He saw the YOG as a platform to not only protect the health of young athletes but also inspire youths around the world to be better human beings, true sports people and ambassadors in society. By offering youths a whole event dedicated to them, the IOC has shown that its commitment to the youth of today and tomorrow is about action and not just words.

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to build a peaceful and better world by educating youths through sport which is practised without discrimination of any kind, in a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. The YOG is a platform whereby youths gather to appreciate the spirit of Olympism. Olympism emphasizes a way of life based on the joy of effort and the educational value of good example. These ideals will be woven into the Olympic Education lessons which will be conducted for all students like yourselves during Physical Education, Civics and Moral Education, CCAs etc. You will learn to embrace the Olympic values of universality, equality and harmony in your actions.

Our athletes’ self-awareness will be heightened when they recognise their own strengths and develop greater self-efficacy. This would happen through competition in various sporting events and immersion in the exciting education and cultural programmes offered by the host country. Interacting with youths from diverse backgrounds, they will also learn to respect other cultures and plant the seeds for new relationships. In summary, the YOG would bring the world’s youths together in a harmonious spirit of sharing and learning and a celebration of diversity.

I would like to share with you some stories about earlier Olympic Games which clearly illustrated the values which were mentioned earlier.

In the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, American Jesse Owens and German Luz Long were tied at 7.87 metres after four jumps at the broad jump competition. Instead of safeguarding his own chances to win, Luz Long offered valuable advice to Jesse Owens on how he could improve his performance. Owens went on to win the competition. The two athletes walked together after the competition to thunderous applause from 80,000 spectators. They remained friends for a long time. They clearly demonstrated that striving to win is just as important as respect for opponents and friendship with them.

In the 1964 Winter Games in Austria, the British team found, at the start of their bobsleigh race, that a vital part of their sleigh was broken. The Italian team, who at that point in the race, had the fastest time, offered the British team the part from their own cart. The British team eventually won the gold medal. The Italian team indeed exemplified the “true spirit of sportsmanship”, where competitors are viewed as friendly rivals rather than hated enemies.

In a similar spirit, the competition is now on between Singapore and Moscow. If we are victorious, we would be part of Olympic history, blazing the trail for the Youth Olympic movement. We would be on our way to leaving behind a legacy as the host city of the first YOG. However, if Moscow emerges the winner, we would congratulate them for being worthy competitors in this exciting journey. We would take pride that we have been part of the whole YOG movement. We would join in the Olympic movement by infusing the Olympic values through our Olympic education programme and sending our best athletes to compete in the YOG with the world’s best. There is no greater joy than the joy found in the effort of coming together as a country, knowing that we have given our best in the whole bid process.

After all, in the words of Pierre de Coubertin, the man who revived the modern Olympics, “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the victory, but the struggle.”

Finally, we would like to wish Singapore all the best in her bid to be the host city and more importantly we would like to wish the YOG movement a great success.

P1 Tambourine Dance takes off at SHPS

Our P1 pupils are currently doing a Creative cum Tambourine Dance course as part of our Aesthetics is Alive Programmes. The school provides skill based training in the area of Aesthetics and this is just one of many programmes pupils at St.Hilda's go through. The company helping us, Dance Atelier is very experienced in training pupils in Dance and the school is looking forward to the final Dance production by each class.

House Practices - OUR P4 PUPILS

Our P4 pupils have started their journey this year for Talent Fiesta. They have been practicing against each other over the last 3 weeks at various sports. This year we introduced Handball and its a hit. Watching them play, I was pleased to see our pupils executing some of their learning from PE lessons. Bouncing and shooting at the goal were evident in their game.

The floorball players also were having a whale of a time on the courts. With so much enthusiasm coming from the pupils. its no wonder floorball is such a popular sport kids. Frisbee also took flight at our field. Pupils were seen running up and down. Maybe it was due to the fact that in P3, all of them went through a 10week course during PE. They definately look like pros. The PE department is proud of our kids as many of them shook hands at the end of each activity. Good sportsmanship must rule the day. We wish all our pupils all the best for your games.

House Practices for 2008

Dear Parents,

A Happy New Year to one and all. By now, you would have received the dates for training for P4, P5 and P6 pupils House practices. We would like to emphasise that the practices are compulsory for everyone so that they can get to know their teams better. P3 pupils need not come back in the afternoons as their contribution to their House will come from individual work done in the classroom during Art.

Rationale and Objectives

Talent Fiesta seeks to serve the masses. More pupils will have an opportunity to be involved in sports competitions. Teamwork, perserverance and fairplay are our three pillars of the activities. We hope to also allow pupils with different talents to showcase at various platforms throughout their 6 years at SHPS. The other objective is ' A Sense of Belonging' for House and school. Every child's involvement goes towards the House overall points so do encourage your children to be involved.

Sports

P6 pupils will get to choose from soccer, floorball, frisbee, touch rugby and captian's ball while the P4s have all the same sports except touch rugby which is replaced by handball. The Housemasters will help each child find a sport they enjoy and can contribute in for their House.

Music

Every class will have 4 groups representing their respective Houses. The group will choose one fo the 4 categories to perform in an Idol style competition. Singing, Dancing, Percussions and Recorder Playing are the 4 categories that they can choose from. Teacher judges will identifythe best items to perform for the rest of the school at the finale.

Art

This year, the Art Competition has taken a new approach. Pupils will prepare their art piece for the eventual judgin on the actual fiesta day. Preparation will be during Art lessons and each child will work on a theme for the fiesta. The judging this year will be done by the parents of each class. Best pieces may be selected for Art murals in each classrooom.

We hope that this year, the fiesta will be an eye opener for all parents as we work towards inviting all of you for the activities. We want to let you see your kids in action as well as have a feel of how succesful the fiesta is at reaching out to more pupils, allowing them opportunities to show their talents in many areas. We look forward to the 7/3/08 and hope you mark it in your calendar. Till then, God bless.

A Happy 2008 to all!

Welcome back to one and all. The PE department is happy to start the new year with some highlights for term 1. The Talent Fiesta will be held on the last day of term 1. As such, groupings for each game will be done within the 1st two weeks of school. P4 and P6 pupils must choose a sport to participate in for their House. There has been a change to the P4 games as we intoduce handball to replace Touch rugby. P6 games will be similar to last years format.

Prizes for only the top team from each House will be given away. The best player in terms of conduct, sportsmanship and skill will be recognised by his peers with the Best Sportsman Award.

The P5 pupils also have a Outdoor Adventure Camp in week 5 of term 1. This camp must not be missed. Exciting activities have been planned and pupils will learn a lot from the experience. Look out for more details in a few weeks time.

We look forward to more lessons for you to learn from. PE teachers will be adding their own blogs for their own classes to learn from. Keep a look out for your PE teachers blog and we shall vote on the best one at the end of the year.

Even our teachers were on top of their game with a children's day performance to end the Hip Hop week with a bang. The Hip Hop performances were part of our overall Aesthetics Alive programme which is funded by our Programme for School Based Excellence Award. This 8 week programme is just one of the 5 fundamental aesthetics education programmes that the school has for all our pupils.

P3 Frisbee soaring high

We concluded our P3 Frisbee programme last week with a successful competition held at the school field. Every class selected their bet 7 players to participate in a Frisbee competition. There were 2 groups of 5 classes each who fought it out in the preliminaries and eventually we were left with the Champions team from 3/10 for the girls and 3/9 for the boys.
It was heartening to see the strong support from some of their classmates who did not play but stood outside the fence with placards, cheering their friends on. That was good class spirit.
We hope to bring more games like these to our pupils in the future. We owe our thanks to Ms Daisy Ng and her team of PE teachers who planned and work with Uncle Rahim and the Frisbee coaches to make the tournament possible. Lesson on Side Arm Throw for Ultimate Frisbee

Click on the video below for an explanation on how to execute the side throw. In the side arm delivery, the two finger grip is used. Grasp the disc in the throwing hand with the thumb on top so that the rim of the disc makes contact with the web bewteen the thumb and index finger. While maintaining contact with the web, rotate the disc clockwise until the pad of the middle finger makes full contact with the inside of the rim. Place the index finger along side of the middle finger for support. Pinch the disc with the thumb in such a manner that the grip is firm yet comfortable.
Throughout the forward arm swing and release, the palm of the throwing hand must remain parallel to the ground. A very common fault of novice throwers is to rotate the palmduring the release causing the disc to turn sharply to the left.

We seem to have a lot of 'Hip and Happening' pupils in Primary 5. This comment was passed by a PE teacher recently after watching the kids in action. "Some of them can really move," he went on to say. 5/7 showed us what is was like to get down to the music. Let's see which class will rise up to the challenge to present the best Hip Hop Dancing class by the end of the workshops. The winning class shall be presented with a trophy.

Talent Fiesta vs Sports Day

I started this blog to allow more discussion between our stakeholders with regards to our school programmes. Here is my take on why we embarked on Talent Fiesta instead of Sports Day.

Some brief history, Sports Day represented the schools pen-ultimate sporting event in the school calendar as it showcased our sporting talents in the field of track and field. It catered to about 30 pupils per level and 120 per House. All in all, as many as 480 pupils took part in the sports. Training was held 3 times a week so all CCAs had to be suspended so that the House practices could be conducted. This would mean, some pupils who did not make the cut were asked to wait for 3 months before joining a CCA. Selection was based on teacher's (some not PE trained) assessment of the child's ability and records in the event during trials. Some Housemasters had to be trained from scratch when asked to take on the role of Housemaster. The Housemaster would need to know how to select pupils for 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, baton relay events, long jump, high jump,etc. Not an easy task especially for a non-PE trained teacher.

Points of Consideration

When we decided to embark on the Talent Fiesta, we needed to consider a few things.
1) How to make sure all pupils get a chance to participate?
2) How to overcome the problem of having teachers who do not know how to coach athletics elements?

3) How to ensure all our kids get a more holistic experience at SHPS? This meant looking into ways to allow CCA to run concurrently, tapping on other areas like music and art as well as fitting all this into our system for after school programmes.

Problems
1. The previous problem when we had Sports Day was that when 100 pupils per level from each House wanted to participate in the sports, only 30+ pupils were chosen. Only the best in each event made it to represent the House. The other 70 sat in the stands and cheered for their friends.

2. The next issue was that some House teachers were not PE trained as we did not have enough PE teachers to help train the pupils so many were disadvantaged when it came to getting proper training.
3. Training for the Sports day meant 10 weeks of selection and 3 weeks of competition HEATS.
4. On Sports Day, it meant another session of briefing for teachers who have never been a timekeeper before, acted as position judge or race official duties. Occasionally, these teachers, who were new to the job made mistakes and it could have meant some child losing due to their negligence.

5. We were about to embark on the 5 day week, 4-2 model which affected the CCA programmes in our school tremendously. This meant all CCAs had to be conducted after school on weekdays only. We now had 4 levels in the morning. Resource allocation was a nightmare.

Comparisons
Sports day caters to the elite sportsmen who have a gift in running or have already trained in that sport for a long time just like swimming and sailing. Training an individual for such events takes more time and resources that now is spent catering to more pupils via the team sports approach. In the past, it took about 10 weeks to do selection and training of a group of 30 pupils per level from P3 to P6 to be able to conduct a Sports day for 120 x 4 Houses = 480 pupils. Now as many as 800 pupils get a chance to participate during Talent Fiesta. Just as many are involved in other areas such as Art and Music at the different levels. As such as many as 1600 pupils get an opportunity to be involved in various activities that allow for a more holistic experience.

We would not be able to conduct both Talent fiesta and Sports day in the same year as it is too taxing on our teachers as well as the schedule now with the 5 day work week. All our teachers work double shifts trying to give remedials, CCA, finish marking within a day, etc. To top that, there are other areas such as NAPFA, ACES and CCAs to consider when planning such a big event. With this in mind, we had to decide on either one. This way, both the kids and the teachers can survive the hectic schedule in our schools.

I too enjoyed my Sports Day when I was young as I represented my House in 400m and 800m. I won some of those events so it made it even more special but now as I am in a position to see other pupils when they do not get a chance to participate I wonder how my friends, who never had a chance to take part, felt during those days as a kid. As such we decided that the Talent Fiesta could help address these problems and get more pupils to participate. Even those who wanted to just watch could help as reserves in some way or other. More importantly, everyone could be involved. This resulted in the participation rate being increased from 30% to 90%.

By the way, did you know that for pupils exhibiting talents in track and field, we have actually signed them up for National competitions. We have done so for swimming as well. Parents have approached us to sign their kids up as they are gifted in the area so we do not disadvantage our kids who are gifted in those areas and can use that for their DSA entries. Rachel Baby for rope skipping and Bertrand Ong for swimming were examples of pupils who flourished in their sports even though the school did not have a showcase for them. They made it to their respective schools on DSA too.

Conclusion
Our aim is to reach out to more pupils and give them a fulfilling experience here at St.Hilda's. I always believe that we have should find fun and pleasure despite the rigors of life. Knowing that God made us a certain way for his purposes (Psalm 139:13-16), knowing that he is at work in our lives through our experiences (Romans 8:28), and knowing that he has gifted us to do certain things for the Kingdom (1 Peter 4:10-12) reminds us to find his plan for us, do it well, and have fun doing it! I hope your children find something they sincerely enjoy doing and go all out to do it well.

Our Lower Primary PE teachers in Action

Our P1 and P2 PE teachers attended a skipping workshop to prepare them for Term 3. Due to the skippathon in Term 3, all P1 pupils will be equiped with a skipping rope and learn some neat moves for the event. The Skippathon is a yearly event that hopes to raise funds for Heart patients from the Singapore Heart Foundation. We also hope to inculcate in our kids the right attitude towards physical activity in the future. Rope skipping is one of the many ways we promote sports in the school.

New Gadgets for NAPFA!

We are currently in the midst of the info comm era. Our PE committee has embarked on a new system to help cut down the number of teachers needed for NAPFA. With the help of our ICT guru, Mr Dan Ang from the GEP department, we are trying to embrace the current technology advances in school. Mr Ang has created a programme with some simple tools to assist us in the 1.6km NAPFA run adminstration. The speed at which results can be collated and sorted is a key feature in the project. We will be studying the benefits as well as disadvantages to further improve on the system.

Talent Fiesta 2007

Last Friday 23/3/07 we celebrated our 3rd Talent Fiesta. We were very blessed to have all 4 levels partcipating in Music, Art and Sports simultaneously. The children had a wonderful time performing or competing against each other. Handy House emerge Champions this year.

P4 and P6 pupils played a variety of games such as Captain's ball, Floorball, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer and Touch Rugby. Every child had to participate in one activity. As a result, we achieved our objectives of mass participation.

We were pleased to see many pupils who enjoyed themselves and some who were pleasantly surprised to have won a prize for themselves. There was also a good spirit of sportsmanship among the players as evident by the 40 awards for Best Sportsboys/girls that day.

Most of all we want to thank God for providing great weather, a safe time with minimum accidents and great team of teachers who made the day possible for our pupils. To God be the Glory.
